Shortly after Daniel Updike inherited Cocumscussoc in 1737, he remodeled the family home to a more fashionable Georgian style. He removed the facade gables and projecting porch and moved the front door to the center. He extended the leanto at the rear of the building and raised it to two full stories. At that time the house would have appeared much as it does today. Drawing of Smith's Castle by Marjorie Vogel, 1990.
